Digitizing CUA's Student Newpaper
The Tower is an independent newspaper serving the CUA community since 1922. Print editions of The Tower
are published on Fridays during the regular academic year, and the online version of each edition is released on Sunday evenings.
The newspaper celebrated its 85th anniversary in Spring 2008.
The online edition has seven sections as well as an online archive. The sections of the online edition are:
- Front Page
- News
- Sports
- Forum
- Features
- 5th Column
- Notes and Asides
To receive full access to the site, users must register. There are no membership restrictions or fees.
The web site has an archive of only the online editions of The Tower dating back to 2000. Only one edition from
1999 (October 27 edition) is available in the archive. No digitized copies of current or older print editions are available
on the website.

Start Date: With what year/volume do you wish to have digitized? I don't know for sure, but I would assume that it would be a high priority to get the older and brittle ones digitized, as well as the years covering the interesting social issues of the 1960's and 1970's. So we could say 1922/23-1975/76.
End Date: 1975/76

Are they brittle?
1922-1924 and 1949-1951 are photocopied onto acid free paper, so they are not brittle
1926-2941 are on better quality paper, still very bright color, not yellow, but a bit brittle
1946-1957 are quite yellow and brittle, with many small tears along the edges
1958-1971 are a bit yellow and slightly brittle, with some small tears along the edges
1971-2006 are not brittle
Are they bound or loose?1922-1924 and 1949-1951 are unbound photocopies, and all other years are bound
Are any of collection on microfilm? If so, are the microfilms the original copies and what is the condition of those copies?
Yes, much of The Tower is on microfilm; from the beginning of the paper
in 1922 through the end of the 2002-2003 school year. The Archives has
the archival copy as well as a user copy of the microfilm. I think the
condition is pretty good. I'm not sure if it was the original copy, but
I don't know why the archival copy wouldn't be.
I don't know if the size of the material matters, but here are the sizes of the material throughout the years:
1922-1924 = 14" height x 11" wide photocopy pages
1925-1926 = 18 5/8" x 11 3/4" bound pages
1926-1941 = 22 1/8" x 17" bound pages
1946-1970 = 17 1/2" x 11 3/8" bound pages
1949-1951 = 14" x 11" photocopy paper
1971-1973 = 16 3/4" x 10 5/8" bound pages
1973-2004 = 14 3/4" x 10 5/8: bound pages
